Reported today that Fidel Castro Addressed the Latin American Medical School Graduation and awarded Graduation Rings to top graduates.
Sixteen students with exceptional academic results received their diplomas, graduation rings, and a special edition of Don Quixote from Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez and other distinguished personalities.
The Latin American Medical School, located west of Havana occupies the facilities of the former Naval Academy. After being refurbished and suited for its current purposes, it received its first students in 1999. Since then, it has been training young people mainly from Latin America and the Caribbean, although it also caters to students from the United States and African countries.
Locally; the University of Fort Hare will be the first African Institution to award a Graduation Ring to a former Head of State. The Nelson Mandela Foundation's CEO, John Samuel, has provisionally confirmed Madiba's acceptance of an Honorarium Ring from his Alma Mater. Verne Harris, the manager of the Memory Centre project, has facilitated the hosting of the presentation at Mandela House and is conscious of the close links with the University which houses the Liberation Archives.
Honorarium Rings will also be awarded to Oliver Tambo, Robert Sobukwe, Chris Hani and Govan Mbeki; an honour role of heroes of the struggle. Rings will also be awarded to leaders of industry and academia who also attended the prestigious institution, the first institution of higher learning to have the Supreme Order of Baobab (Gold Class) conferred.
